Linhof Technikardan 23 System

The Linhof Technikardan 23 is a 6x9 version of the Technikardan 4x5.  It is somewhat smaller and lighter than the 4x5 version.  It has all of the same movements, and can accept lenses on a Technika lens board.  It has a ground glass which you compose the image and focus on.  It is then either lifted to put a 2x3 film holder in (as if it were a 4x5) or removed and a rollex film back may be attached.  For more information, take a look at the linhof web site at http://www.linhof.de/.

Here are my impressions of this camera.  If you want to shoot architectural on medium format, and will be walking around buildings, this is a great camera.  If you like or feel that you need the movements of a large format camera, want to use your large format lenses with medium format, etc... this is a great camera.  If you want to shoot scenic images on medium format film, and want the absolute best glass (Schneider in my own opinion), this is a great camera.  If you want to shoot sports, wildlife, auto racing, or anything else that might move faster than a turtle (and even a turtle in some cases) then this is not a great camera.  There are two things I do not like about this camera.  The first is that it is a pain to focus and compose on the small ground glass.  The second is the process of removing the ground glass, attaching a film back, and replacing the ground glass.  However, this is a task required of any monorail camera, so I should stop complaining.  Some of the things I do like about this camera are that the rail folds compactly, that you can use almost any large format lens (did I mention that I like Schneider lenses???), tons of movements, the solid engineering and smooth operation of the gears.  There is more, but you would have to go shooting with one of these to see if it feels right to you.  I will say this, when I look at the negatives that this camera and Schneider lenses produce, I feel like I have accomplished something great.  Everything is tack sharp, good tones, etc....  This has a lot to do with the lens that is being used, however, it also has to do with the use of the movements and the engineering of the camera.  My personal feelings are that I will be using this camera for at least the next decade, and possibly longer.
